Warning: NYX Lipstick Contains a Dangerous Ingredient

Best Blogger Tips

I apologize for the hearts I am about to break with this one.  I was answering reader comments when I saw EmmeFatale had posted asking if the NYX Jumbo Pencils contained Parabens.  No, they don't contain Parabens, they contain something much, much worse.

NYX lip products contain a chemical called BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole).  It's primarily used as an antioxidant to prevent fatty products from going rancid and developing a funky smell.  BHA is banned in Europe in the use of cosmetics and California has it on the list of 'known carcinogens and reproductive toxicants'.  The Environmental Working Group has BHA topping out at a 10 on their health hazard scale.  But hey, let's put it into lip products where women can slowly ingest it throughout the day.

Other NYX cosmetics contain BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene), also an antioxidant.  Along with being in cosmetics, it is also in jet fuel, rubber and embalming fluid.  Yummy.  It is a Toluene-based product. Toleune is a neuro toxin that is especially dangerous to pregnant women.  Those of you who are into nail polish should recognize Toluene as the chemical the majority of nail polish companies removed from their products.  Most nail polish actually boasts a 'Toluene' free label.

NYX Lip Products Containing BHA:

The above list is not inclusive. If you use NYX products, please search out the ingredients list on the NYX website so you can make an informed decision about your products and your health.

WHAT. I was totally wearing shadows AND bronzer from their Make-Up Artist palette today. I love that palette, it's got a wide range of colours and all that. Then I was looking for reviews on Maybelline's classic GreatLash (because I hate it with the passion of a thousand suns), found your site and got all paranoid. EVERYTHING in that palette has parabens. THE MOISTURIZER I JUST PUT ON HAS PARABENS. MY TOOTHPASTE PROBABLY HAS PARABENS. I'm pretty sure I am going to die a slow, horrible personal product induced death. OH THE HUMANITY! I am now going to rifle through all my make-up and probably throw it all away. Phooey.
On the upside, less cancer for me. So... Thank you?

Not that it helps, but I went through the same thing. I literally got rid of 99% of my products. I just couldn't believe that almost everything I used on a daily basis was full of crap chemicals that can cause a laundry list of problems and ending with cancer. Check out my first blog post.

Hi,
very well done!! I always check the ingredients out when buying cosmetics,I write to the cosmetic company concerned or search out on their websites, or write to the website customer service when buying make up or cosmetics online and ask for the list of ingredients of the items I want to buy.
I was appalled too to find out how many NYX products contain BHA, also it is wise to make sure that BHT as well isn't among the cosmetic ingrdients you want to use.
Good, natural substitutes for BHA and BHT would be vitamin E but cosmetics companies prefer to use the cheaper and very very unhealthy BHA's and BHT's just for greedy money saving reasons.
Love your website and the info you share with us readers.
Cheers
Marilisa

Thank you so much for posting this! This blog is awesome. Please keep posting. I would love to hear more in brands that ARE non toxic, since it seems these are in the minority.

Hi. What happened with the nyx pearl eyeshadow formula? My old eyeshadow does not have paraben and aliminium on label.. They changed the formula and product? Because now I see these nasty chemicals substances on description of formula. So sad!

Hi!! I was wondering: does the NYX Sheer Gloss contain anything bad? I checked and everything seemed ok but I just wanted to be sure.

Yes, the sheer gloss also contains BHA or B.H.A. as it is listed on the ingredients list. I talk about it in the blog post above. Not worth the risk.
